Taking the Bus 101: Your Guide to Public Transportation in Glenwood

Glenwood’s proximity to the centre of town means that it’s crossed by a number of public transport routes. Why drive and fuss over parking when you can be downtown in minutes for just a few Rand? Check out our guide to Glenwood’s buses and taxi routes to see which option is best for you.


 

Bus Routes:

 

Umbilo- The Umbilo bus travels between the bus ranks at the Workshop in the CBD to Umbilo. Leaving the Workshop it travels up Anton Lembede (Smith Street) to Che Guevara (Moore) and down Brand Road before turning on Helen Joseph (Davenport) past Davenport Square. From Helen Joseph it continues along Esther Roberts (Bartle) Road, through Glenwood and Umbilo before ending at the Rossburgh train station. The return route is the same with the difference that once in the CBD it travels down Dr. Pixley Kaseme (West) before turning on Samora Machel Street to return to the Workshop.

The timetable is a bit variable, but in general there is one bus per hour between 06:30 and 17:30. In addition, during the weekdays two trips in both the morning and in the late afternoon end at and leave from South Beach rather than the Workshop. Service is limited on weekends, and on Sunday in particular.  Check the timetable for exact times:

Tollgate (Mynah)- The Tollgate Mynah travels between Tollgate, on Ridge Road, and the Workshop in the CBD. The taxi travels up Anton Lembede to Che Guevara Road (Moore Road) and continues to the top of the ridge near St. Augustines. The return route is the same with the difference that once in the CBD it travels down Dr. Pixley Kaseme (West) before turning on Samora Machel Street to return to the Workshop.

The timetable is a bit variable, with buses running at more frequent intervals during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Service is limited on weekends, and on Sunday in particular.  Check the timetable for exact times:

Taxi Routes:

 

Umbilo- The Umbilo taxi route starts in the CBD on Monty Naicker (Pine) Street. It travels along Margaret Mncadi (Victoria Embankment), up Che Guevara (Moore), down Brand Road before turning on Helen Joseph (Davenport) past Davenport Square. From Helen Joseph it continues  along Esther Roberts (Bartle) Road, through Glenwood and Umbilo before ending at the Rossburgh train station. The return route is the same.

Tollgate- The tollgate taxi- identified by the sign in the window- starts in the CBD at the Musgrave Taxi rank at the corner of Joe Slovo and Anton Lembede Street (cnr Aliwal/Smith streets). The taxi travels up Anton Lembede to Che Guevara Road (Moore Road) and continues to the top of the ridge near St. Augustines. The taxi fills up as it goes along, frequently stopping for passengers. It operates from 06h00 to 19h00. The return route is the same with the difference that once in the CBD it travels down Dr. Pixley Kaseme (West) to the Musgrave rank.

In addition to these routes, a huge number of taxi routes stop at or pass by Berea Centre. If you're desperate to get downtown it's the quickest spot to catch a ride.
